Ter and Llobregat basin rivers are located in Catalonia, in the northeast of Spain. The Ter River is 208 km long, with 2955 km2 of basin surface. It originates in the middle of the Catalan Pyrenees, passes through Girona, and empties into the Mediterranean Sea.
The Llobregat River is 170 km long, with 4957 km2 of basin surface. It comes from the north west of Catalonia and flows into the Mediterranean Sea, close to Barcelona. This is a densely inhabited area and thus urban wastewaters represent a significant input in the river. The Llobregat River has been also polluted by the effluents from different industries located along the basin.

Ter and Llobregat Rivers supplies 55 and 45 % of drinking water to Barcelona andsurroundings. Water of Llobregat River is treated at San Joan Despí and Abrera, Ter River is treated in a third and transportated to Barcelona through a pipeline. Grounwater from the aquifer Llobregat River is also used for human consumption, collected from wells, situated in an agricultural area.
